Every five years, hundreds of thousands of animals are rounded up and marched to their deaths in Bariyarpur, Nepal, the site of the temple of the Hindu goddess Gadhimai. This violent slaughter takes place for superstitious reasons, despite a ban announced in 2015 by temple authorities and direction from the Supreme Court of Nepal to eliminate this practice. The Gadhimai festival is infamous for being the world's largest animal sacrifice bloodbath.

Caring people are unable to comprehend why, in 2019, thousands of animals are still being decapitated and hacked apart in this festival. Today, archaic rituals like human sacrifice aren't tolerated – and animals are living, thinking, feeling beings who experience fear and pain, just as humans do.

Instead of casting shame upon Nepal, the Gadhimai festival can be transformed into a massive gathering of peaceful worship.

Dear Honourable Prime Minister,

I'm horrified that a mass slaughter of animals took place at the Gadhimai festival this year, despite a ban announced in 2015 by temple authorities and direction from the Supreme Court of Nepal to eliminate this practice.

The Gadhimai festival is infamous for being the world's largest animal sacrifice bloodbath, and it's tainting the whole – otherwise beautiful – nation of Nepal in the eyes of the world. Caring people are unable to comprehend why, in 2019, thousands of animals are being decapitated and hacked apart in this festival. Today, archaic rituals like human sacrifice aren't tolerated – and animals are living, thinking, feeling beings who experience fear and pain, just as humans do.

When the Gadhimai temple announced an end to the mass slaughter, the world rejoiced. That's because animal sacrifice is bad for everyone: it normalises killing, desensitises children to the suffering of other living beings, and puts the public at risk of infection and disease.

Instead of casting shame upon Nepal, the Gadhimai festival can be transformed into a massive gathering of peaceful worship. This would undoubtedly improve the country's global image and build momentum for the "Visit Nepal 2020" campaign.
