Pezoo—a polar bear living in captivity at Shenzhen Xiaomeisha Sea World in China—has known nothing but deprivation for his entire life. Since being moved to Sea World more than three years ago, he's lived alone, out of the daylight, in a 30-square-meter concrete-and-glass enclosure with only a tiny pool in which to swim.
Because visitors knock on the glass, take photographs, and constantly shout at him, he's denied even a moment's peace.
Captivity and deprivation are taking a toll on his physical and psychological well-being. Denied the intellectual stimulation and space he needs, he exhibits signs of "zoochosis"—abnormal, stereotypic behavior—such as repeatedly biting his forelegs, pawing at his face, and rubbing against a mural that's painted like the Arctic landscape he's never seen.
Polar bears—Earth's largest land carnivores—spend much of their time hunting for seals on Arctic sea ice. Their home ranges often extend hundreds of kilometers, and they've been seen swimming in open water more than 300 kilometers from land. Pezoo's enclosure at Sea World is only a small fraction of the space he needs.
