Elephants Stabbed at Taman Safari

Shocking photos reveal that handlers at Taman Safari in Bogor, Indonesia, pulled elephants' tails, stabbed the animals with bullhooks, and beat them to control them and force them to perform for visitors.

Abuse with bullhooks is the norm whenever elephants are forced to perform.

Taman Safari has come under fire in the past for heavily drugging a lion so that he could be used as a prop in tourist photo ops. Although unsettling, scenes like this are not uncommon. Elephants who are used as tourist attractions live under the constant threat of violence and are routinely kept chained. All over Asia, zoos, safari parks, and self-proclaimed "sanctuaries" charge for photo ops or up-close interactions with animals who belong in the wild, just so that the facilities can line their pockets, and the animals are always abused to make them comply.

Take Action

Pledge never to visit any place that profits from live animals, and tell friends and family to leave cruel tourist traps off their vacation itineraries. Buying a ticket to any animal exhibit supports cruelty to animals.

Do Even More

Please also urge Taman Safari's president and Indonesia's Minister of Environment and Forestry to send the elephants to legitimate sanctuaries, where they'll be protected and free from harassment. PETA stands ready to help with this.
